Repository Exploration - Nuclear Waste Storage

Repository

Radioactive waste must be isolated from the human habitat for a long period of time until its radioactivity has decayed to a harmless level. For this purpose, various countries are looking for suitable sites for deep geological repositories where the waste is enclosed in a dense and stable rock formation at a depth of several hundred meters.

Geophysical methods, such as those used by Geo5 in projects in Switzerland and Germany, are used to determine these sites. In particular, the identification and characterization of tectonic faults in the subsurface is a key aspect of geological interpretation studies for the search for a repository for radioactive waste.
